Delphi has not only be an important religious center in Antiquity. It has also a rich Christian history. From the 4th century AD and on, Delphi is an Episcopate (=has its own Bishop). In the ’60s the ruins of an Early Christian Basilica church, with splendid mosaics, were discovered at the entry of the modern village.

The foundations and the mosaics of the narthex and the aisles of a late 5th – early 6th c. AD Christian Basilica were found in the place now occupied by “Apollo Hotel”.

Archaeologist Chatzidakis carried out the excavation. The first publication was issued by archaeologist Lazarides.

The mosaics were transferred to (and today can be seen by) the entrance of the Archaeological Museum of Delphi. It is important to note that the animals (both wild and domestic), pictured at the aisles, stand as moral examples (for instance, the cat that catches the mouse points out that the safety of the Crew of Christian Delphi cannot be achieved outside the protective actions of the Church.
