the bronze donkey of the ambraciots at Delphi - the delphiguide.com

The Ambraciotics (habitants of the city of Ambracia) dedicated to Apollo a bronze statue of a donkey, reminiscent of their victory in battle against the Molossians. This statue once stood inside the Sanctuary of Delphi.

The Ambraciots were about to be victims of a night invasion, prepared by the Molossians. A herdsman passing by, driving his donkey home from the rural area of Ambracia, came across a jennet. His donkey, wanting to mate, started braying. Molossians, thinking they were betrayed, started running away, chased by the Ambraciots who, finally, defeated them in the battleground.

So, a donkey wanting to mate saved the whole city of Ambracia!
